Carbon footprint

The impact of climate change is being felt globally, and carbon is now one of the most pressing risks faced by businesses. Over the years, we have developed tried and tested ways to help businesses decarbonise. What differentiates us is our ability to simplify complex issues into straightforward, easy-to-implement steps, as well as our approach, which is centered around a ‘just transition’.

Put simply, we recognise that as companies begin to decarbonise, they must leave no one behind and ensure that the social impacts and benefits of the transition to a low-carbon economy are considered.

Transitioning to net-zero has never been more urgent. Quantifying emissions through a carbon footprint is the key first step in this transition.

The carbon footprint process is a simple way for a company to quantify and communicate its environmental impact both internally as well as externally to customers, clients and other key stakeholders through calculating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Needs and requirements

Our robust five-step process reviews every part of a company’s boundaries, data gathering process, carbon calculation and emission hotspots. This is the starting point and will enable an organisation to track its future progress.

  1. Operational review:
We will gain a deeper understanding of your organisation through your business activities, management, key sites and where you are located.
  2. Organisational boundary:
We will translate your business activities and structures into emissions activities aligned to international standards.
  3. Data gathering:
We will work collaboratively with your team to catalogue data sources and identify appropriate collection mechanisms, providing data collection tools, training and guidance.
  4. Footprint calculation:
Once the data has been collated we will calculate your footprint using the most up-to-date, geographically and sectorally relevant emission conversion factors.
  5. Reporting:
Simply Sustainable will synthesise the process into a simple report providing detailed breakdowns of your footprint as well as key hotspots.
Carbon footprinting led by the Greenhouse Gas Protocol enables organisations to measure and manage their GHG emissions and become more efficient, resilient and prosperous. World Resource Institute, 2019

Carbon footprinting is not a one-time project. We have experience of meeting organisations where they are on their journey and providing support. Carbon footprints can be approached at a number of levels:

  • Organisational:
This service will help you understand relevant carbon sources across your company’s operations and supply chain.
  • Product:
Looking at your emissions at a product-specific level will enable you to better communicate your impact with customers and inform decision-making processes.
  • Portfolio:
Financial institutions are increasingly interested in quantifying emissions associated with investments, insurance and pension portfolios.

Throughout his career, Henry has worked for a range of organisations including environmental start-ups, charities, regional government, sustainability consultancies and in-house.

After advising Nando’s as a consultant Henry went on to join the restaurant group as their Head of Sustainability. Over his 5 years at the organisation, Henry and the team reduced the carbon footprint of the average meal by 40%, reduced direct emissions by 98% and donated over 2.5 million meals through their industry-leading food donation programme. In 2020 the company became the first restaurant group in the world with an approved Science-Based Targets initiative and a continued commitment to better chicken welfare.

In 2021 Henry joined Daylesford Organic and Bamford as their Director of Sustainability where he was responsible for keeping these pioneering businesses at the forefront of sustainability. Henry drove impact throughout the supply chain: from organic and regenerative farming practices, through to hospitality, retail, clothing, skincare and spas. During his time at the company, Henry led the creation of its sustainability strategy and projects on soil carbon assessment, product and corporate carbon footprinting and sustainability comms. This culminated in the group achieving B Corp accreditation.
