AI for Sustainability Programme 2026

A structured programme designed for
sustainability professionals tackling complex, data led
problems.

We are Inviting organisations to share sustainability
challenges, explore them through applied learning
and collaboration, and where appropriate, introduce
AI-enabled approaches that genuinely support
progress – not as a starting point, but in service of
outcomes.

Participation is free and open to in-house
sustainability teams across industries.

At Simply Sustainable we’re passionate about helping our clients to create more value and impact wherever they are on their sustainability journey. We believe that human expertise and interaction is more important than ever, and it is this focus that has underpinned our adoption of AI.

With this attention to working with our clients along their journey, we want to share our accelerating AI capabilities and co-create solutions which address your sustainability problems. We’ll be doing this via an “AI for Sustainability Programme”, running until the end of March 2026. You can join this for free, by submitting a relevant problem, by joining as a collaborator, or simply joining our demo event where we’ll share the outputs of the programme. We’ll be sticking to our ethos of making things simple whenever we can, and while AI is complex it’s also very accessible, and so you’re encouraged to join whatever your AI fluency. This programme is a direct result of how our own way of working has evolved.

This evolution wasn’t driven by AI’s growing capability, but by the point at which continuing to treat it as a side experiment started to limit the impact we could have for clients. That’s the context for our AI journey.

AI at Simply Sustainable

When we accelerated our AI journey at Simply Sustainable, we did so with a clear understanding of both the risks and the opportunities.

A well-defined AI strategy reduces operational and compliance risks during implementation, by strengthening data management, ensuring accountability and protecting organisational reputation. It also supports workforce engagement and retention, as unclear guidance fuels anxiety, disengagement, and the loss of both domain experts and AI-skilled talent. Over time, over-reliance on poorly governed AI can lead to workforce deskilling, eroding core capabilities and reducing the organisation’s long-term productivity and competitiveness.

In June 2025, we made a strategic decision to put AI at the heart of the business, not to reduce our workforce, but to increase our collective capacity, unlock new value for clients, and free more time for the human thinking and deep collaboration that matter.

To achieve this, we built three foundations:

  • AI Robust governance

First, simple but robust governance that enables safe experimentation with clear guardrails, giving people the confidence to try new ideas while protecting client trust and data integrity.

  • AI Company upskilling

Second, whole-company upskilling that ensures AI isn’t owned by a technical few but becomes a shared capability across the organisation. Everyone now has the capability and empowerment to develop AI applications and incorporate this into their workflows and solution innovations.

  • Culture

Thirdly, a culture that elevates both human and AI strengths, viewing AI as an enabler, reducing low-value tasks and enhancing judgment, creativity and analytical depth. This has improved the quality of our analysis, increased productivity and allowed us to co-create novel solutions with clients.

We’re a small and agile business, which has helped us move quickly. But we believe this model scales. With thoughtful leadership, AI can, in addition to creating financial value through efficiency and innovation, strengthen human capital through skills and engagement, and social capital by maintaining employment and elevating humans to solve the big challenges of our time.

In short, AI done well is good for business, good for people and good for society, and we believe our own transition offers a practical blueprint for others.

The programme

The objective of the programme is to solve sustainability problems that were previously too difficult to solve within the given constraints (due to time, money, technical complexity or something else). We also believe in leveraging human excellence for novel, non-linear thinking, especially when this is multiplied through co-creation, versus the linear, statistically bound approach of most AI. So, we will be showcasing this too.

The programme involves:

  1. Submission, collation and synthesis of innovation ideas. We’ll pick up to 3 problems across a range of sustainability topics, and our experts will collaborate with you and our AI applications to solve these.
  2. Refining and scoping of selected problems, with preliminary ideation of solutions.
  3. Two in-person workshops (one each in Amsterdam and London) where we’ll finalise scope and embark on some initial co-creation of solutions in each region.
  4. Building the solutions, led by the Simply Sustainable team and in collaboration with you, the Solution Owners, and our AI applications.
  5. Two demo events (hosted in Amsterdam and London), where we’ll play back the solutions with the Solution Owners.

To get involved, please complete this form. Even if you don’t have a problem to solve you can join the workshops and demo events as a collaborator.

Looking forward to the innovation and seeing what we can achieve together!
