Modiform’s VSME-aligned sustainability report

Modiform, a leading global supplier of cultivation, transport and packaging systems for the horticultural supply chain, originally fell within the scope for reporting under the CSRD. It therefore engaged Simply Sustainable to support the preparation. Following the changes introduced by the 2025 Omnibus Package, it decided to still publish a VSME-aligned sustainability report, using it as an opportunity to structure and communicate its long-standing commitment to sustainability.

Impacts and benefits

  • First-time sustainability report aligned with the VSME standard: the report enables Modiform to communicate its progress on sustainability in a structured, recognised and accessible format.
  • Transparent communication to stakeholders: with the report, Modiform demonstrates its commitment to transparency and provides its stakeholders with relevant sustainability information about our business.
  • Baseline for progressing the sustainability agenda and future reporting: this first-time sustainability report gives Modiform a clear reference point for measuring and communicating progress towards its sustainability goals going forward.
I really valued Simply Sustainable’s guidance throughout this process: always knowledgeable, pragmatic, and flexible.” Désirée de la Fuente – van Baal Director Sustainable Development, Modiform

The story

When Modiform started preparing for reporting under the CSRD in 2023, it was looking for a partner that could support this process and suited the culture of the organisation. Between 2023 and February 2025, Simply Sustainable guided Modiform through a double materiality process, gap analysis, data collection and development of reporting information. In February 2025, it became clear that Modiform would likely fall out of the scope of the CSRD. The company still decided to publish a sustainability report voluntarily, following the VSME standard, as recommended by the European Commission.

On that decision, Simply Sustainable first drew up an outline of the report, ensuring to do justice to all the work that Modiform had done in preparation for the CSRD, while also adhering to the VSME standard. The material topics identified in the double materiality assessment formed the central thread in the report structure. Non-material topics that are required in the VSME standard were covered in a separate section of the report. In multiple working sessions with Modiform, Simply Sustainable collected the content for the report chapters, building on the knowledge it had built up over the 2-year collaboration. In quick review iterations, the report text was refined and finalised.

With this first-time sustainability report, Modiform can proudly and confidently communicate its progress on sustainability in a structured, recognised and accessible format. It provides its stakeholders with relevant sustainability information about our business and sets a baseline for future reporting and for measuring progress towards its sustainability goals.
