Hochiki Europe’s Sustainability Strategy

Hochiki Europe (UK), part of the Japan-headquartered Hochiki global organisation and a leading manufacturer of commercial and industrial fire detection and emergency lighting solutions, recognised the increasing importance of embedding sustainability across its operations. As customer expectations, tender requirements and regulatory pressures continue to evolve, Hochiki identified the need for a cohesive and credible sustainability strategy. The business sought a partner that could bring structure, clarity and ambition to its sustainability approach, enabling it to strengthen its market position and respond proactively to emerging ESG demands.

Simply Sustainable partnered with Hochiki Europe across 2025 to develop its first sustainability strategy. Designed in close collaboration with internal stakeholders, the strategy defines clear sustainability priorities, KPIs and targets, and provides a long-term vision for sustainable growth.

Impacts and benefits

  • Business-aligned and stakeholder-led: The strategy was developed with Hochiki Europe’s Senior Leadership Team and Core Project Team, underpinned by a robust evidence base, ensuring alignment with commercial objectives, operational priorities and stakeholder expectations.
  • Clear ambition: Hochiki Europe’s horizon scan, maturity assessment, SWOT analysis and topic prioritisation process helped define the highest priority sustainability topics for the business. Eleven priority topics were selected across environmental, social and governance areas, each supported by defined ambition levels and measurable KPIs and targets.
  • Robust strategic framework: Hochiki’s bespoke strategic framework brings together its overall vision for sustainability across three strategic pillars, For each pillar, a set of strategic objectives was then developed based on identified priority topics. The framework provides a clear structure for managing impact and guiding sustainability-related decision-making across the organisation.
  • Preparing for future expectations: The strategy equips Hochiki Europe to respond confidently to evolving regulatory and stakeholder expectations. By establishing a clear framework and priority focus areas, it positions the business to meet forthcoming priorities, such as full carbon footprinting, net-zero target setting and enhanced ESG reporting, and provides a strong foundation for future sustainability initiatives.
This strategy gives us a strong foundation to advance sustainability in a structured and meaningful way. It helps clarify our priorities, supports better decision-making and positions us well to meet the expectations of our customers and wider stakeholders.” Craig Taylor Strategic Marketing Manager, Hochiki Europe

The story

Hochiki Europe operates within the fire detection and emergency lighting industry, where safety, compliance and product reliability are paramount. Simply Sustainable’s approach recognised this context and supported Hochiki to embed sustainability in a way that complements its technical excellence and operational strengths.

The project began with a comprehensive topic identification process, in which a longlist of sustainability topics was developed from ESG frameworks, peer benchmarks and international standards before being refined to a final set of 19 sustainability topics relevant to Hochiki Europe’s business.

A forward-looking horizon scan, structured through a PESTEL (Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Environmental and Legal) framework, was conducted to identify external drivers, risks and opportunities relevant to Hochiki Europe’s industry and operating regions. This was followed by a sustainability maturity assessment, benchmarking Hochiki’s current performance against good practice. Together, these components formed the strategic analysis, which then included a SWOT assessment to identify the business’s sustainability-related strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. These insights provided the evidence base for the topic prioritisation exercise.

The strategic framework was co-created during a series of workshops with Hochiki Europe’s Senior Leadership Team and Core Project Team. The sessions included activities such as prioritising sustainability topics, grouping them under the three pillars, developing strategic objectives and crafting a sustainability vision. The result was a strategic framework that reflects both internal ambition and external expectations and is fully aligned with Hochiki Europe’s business goals.

Following the creation of the strategy framework, Simply Sustainable developed suggested KPIs and targets aligned with international sustainability frameworks including the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB). Peer and competitor benchmarking further informed the design of the KPIs and targets. These KPIs and targets were refined during three collaborative workshops with operational and senior leaders to ensure they were both ambitious and realistic.

Finally, a set of recommendations was provided to support the integration of the strategy across Hochiki Europe. Simply Sustainable also supported the business in communicating the strategic framework, KPIs and targets, ensuring alignment among senior leaders as Hochiki begins the next phase of its sustainability journey.

Outcome

Hochiki Europe now has a clear, credible and stakeholder-aligned sustainability strategy that provides a strong foundation for measurable progress and long-term value creation. With defined KPIs and targets, the business is better positioned to strengthen accountability, enhance customer confidence, demonstrate progress in competitive tenders and prepare for evolving regulatory expectations.

The strategy establishes a structured approach for integrating sustainability into decision-making and offers clarity for teams across the organisation. It also sets the basis for future initiatives, including enhanced sustainability governance, expanded data collection, operational carbon footprinting and the development of net-zero targets.

Simply Sustainable will continue to support Hochiki Europe as it embeds the strategy across the business and begins progressing this next phase of work, including its full operational carbon footprint and the development of net-zero targets. This ongoing support builds on the strong foundations established through the strategy and helps prepare the business for evolving stakeholder and regulatory expectations.
